John Watson himself and, though this is not an uncommon literary device for authors who contribute to the extended Holmes canon, Lovegrove’s take on it is particularly enjoyable. Lovegrove opens this first novel with a metafictional explanation of how he came to possess and subsequently publish a few long-lost manuscripts penned by Dr. Luckily, trope-tolerance is highly subjective (did I mention Star Wars?) and therefore this mash-up of Holmes’ London and Lovecraft’s cosmology of malicious or, at best, ambivalent cosmic forces caused me to shamelessly squeal with excitement like a six-year-old at a screening of the very first Pokémon film. Though these are by no means the only intellectual properties that creatives like to drag out of the closet every few years (here’s looking at you, Star Wars) they are, in my humble opinion, two of the more enjoyable. Likewise, you can’t turn on the television without spotting some new iteration of the legendary detective and his trusty chronicler tackling alternative takes on Doyle’s classic repertoire of conundrums. You can’t scroll through an article these days without seeing the word “Lovecraftian” thrown about (often erroneously) like a fashionable catchphrase, or some caricature of the eponymous, betentacled bringer of doom, Cthulhu. Lovecraft’s infamous Cthulhu mythos, I’d make the argument that the greatest commonality between the two is the fact that our culture just can’t get enough of either.
