The fishermen in the place was accustomed to this kind of set-up everyday. He ventured into the sea every day with his snorkel, flippers, and mask by borrowing someone’s boat. How can a man be happy in this kind of lifestyle Old Vicente had? How can someone be happy with just owning three pieces of things and living on what he can only find? His only priced possession were a snorkel, a pair of flippers and a diver’s mask. And yet, he was as happy as he can be. He used broken iron pots just so he could eat. He didn’t even own a single clothing which was not patched. Vicente, on the other hand, was not rich. In today’s world happiness is always equated with money and all material things we can get our hands on. Old Vicente was a happy man, in fact he was described by narrator as the happiest man he has ever seen. The main character was Old Vicente of Formentera, and much of the story talked about his life and how he ended up on the island of Formentera, Spain. In our Literature 3 class, we discussed the short story written by Eva-Lis Wuorio entitled “The Singing Silence”.
